Influence of dissipative lengthscale on stability
Classic rate-independent associative plastic material becomes unstable within the softening regime, the deformation localizes in a zero-thickness region and any numerical analysis produces results dependent on the meshing procedure.
Considering strain gradient effects in plastic materials, we have shown that:

Higher is the dissipative lengthscale introduced, larger is the delay in occuring of instability and wider is the zone where the non-uniform deformation spreads.
